Liberated Bread is a project by Pigs Can Fly Labs LLC — a small business that likes to do cool shit with hardware. We publish step-by-step guides for liberating abandoned IoT devices from dead cloud services.

What We Do

When a company shuts down its cloud servers, "smart" devices often become paperweights. Liberated Bread publishes guides that walk you through keeping those devices working — offline, local, and free. Every guide includes:

The Name

Liberated Bread is an homage to Cory Doctorow's novella Unauthorized Bread, in which refugees jailbreak locked-down appliances to cook and survive. The ethos is simple: you own your own devices.

Not that bread thing

To be clear: we have nothing to do with the Canadian bread price-fixing scandal, the arrangement among bakers and grocers to inflate the price of packaged bread from roughly 2001 to 2015. No affiliation, no involvement, no gift card. We're a hardware project; the only dough here is metaphorical.

We bring it up because of what it says about the lengths a company will go to. Canada Bread pleaded guilty in 2023 and was fined $50 million, the largest price-fixing fine a Canadian court had handed down at the time. Loblaw and George Weston admitted taking part, reported it, and received immunity from prosecution; they later agreed to a $500-million class-action settlement that the courts approved in 2025, and whose payouts only started landing in shoppers' bank accounts in 2026. Other companies named in the investigation have denied wrongdoing, and as to them the allegations remain allegations.

The instructive part, allegedly, is that this took no internet at all. Phone calls and fax machines were enough to keep toast from costing what toast should cost, for the better part of sixteen years. The connected version is the one we actually document: the toaster is fine, the cloud service it was built to phone is switched off, and the appliance you paid for stops working anyway. Same instinct, newer stack — and this is the version you can fix yourself, usually with a firewall rule.
